Volkswagen Is Bringing Back The Microbus

Volkswagen, Microbus, I.D. Buzz

Volkswagen first debuted their I.D. Buzz microbus concept to the world back in January at the North American International Auto Show. The all-electric concept was part of a major push by the VW brand toward an electric car future and heralded by the tagline, “we make the future real.” And while the I.D. Buzz does represent the future through it’s technological advances it is finding life in large part to its past, “Emotional cars are very important for the brand. We are selling loads of Beetles still, particularly in US markets. But we will also have the Microbus that we showed, which we have recently decided we will build,” VW exec Herbert Diess told Auto Express.

It is still early and details are scarce as to what elements of the I.D. Buzz the brand will keep in returning to their microbus heritage. However, in the meantime, all fans of the original Type 2 can rejoice in knowing that they will one day soon again be seeing the VW name on microbuses.

  1. Why would a growing iconic brand like GMG endorse a European car maker that released 11 million vehicles designed to cheat emissions tests? Is it all about money, lack of ethics or are you just ignorant?
While VW was cheating, American automakers were meeting the standards.

Thanks for nothing GMG, take your VW endorsement and shove it

  2. Ok, cool, a bus, but…can’t they hear the chants of CAMPER! CAMPER! CAMPER!
Darn. I’ll soon be too old if they don’t hurry.

  3. Ok I can’t be the only one that hates the hull electric future look with the voxil wheels the honey come light with this weird oval shaped and and a fugly flat white and green I hate it it’s ugly as all hell the old one is beautiful make it more like the old ones without the “oh it’s the future! ” bull crap as a minibus lover I’m not excited at all also I want gas not electric and if your feeling creative diesel would be pretty cool (tell me your opinion on its looks) 🙂

    • Agree on a lot of fronts. Given this was an early concept we anticipate the production version being less “futuristic” with a lot of those details you mentioned.

  4. The problem with the companies bringing out remakes of old vehicles is that if you are going to go after the retro look, DO IT RIGHT! Don’t give it the overall shape, instead use the original look inside and out, the only things that need updating is the electrical parts and the drivetrain!

  5. Interesting. I wonder how many people would rather see the original design vs this one? Such a classic.
